The European Deepstack Poker Championship is the brainchild of D4 Event's Mike Lacey & Brian Lannon. The plan was to create an event with a difference that would appeal to all types of poker player. Initially some players were sceptical about starting with 50,000 chips, most were worried about the tournament becoming a "nit-fest". 17 minutes into the first event these fears were allayed when the first player lost his stack with AA on a 567 flop! Dara O'Kearney eventually went on to win the inaugural event, besting a field that included EPT champions Julian Thew & Arnaud Mattern, Hendon Mobsters Joe Beevers (6th place) & Barny Boatman. Other top pro's such as Ludovic Lacay, Michel Abecassis and Anthony Roux also made the trip for the first event.
The second European Deepstack event would have grown to 250+ players had the weather not closed Dublin airport leaving 100 players stranded at airports across Europe. WPT champion Surindar Sunar was among those who managed to re-arrange flights to take part. Francis McCormack was the eventual winner after a marathon final table. He beat fellow Irishman Jason Thompkins heads up for the title.
A new lower entry fee of €500+€50 and the praise from all the previous players created unprecedented demand for the 2010 European Deepstack Poker Championships. The event sold out over 400 seats a whole month in advance. D4 Events also joined forces with Chilipoker as the main event sponsor in order to make sure that the event is an even bigger success in years to come.
In 2011 the event will have a capacity of 1500 players with two day ones. Online qualifiers will be starting very soon on Chilipoker.
